Ants

Ants are the tiniest and most annoying of all the pests, their behaviour can be seemingly unpredictable a sea of ants usually follow the presence of one single ant in your home. There are over 3000 species of ants in Australia, the most common in SE Qld is the Coastal Brown Ant, Black House Ant, Green Ant, and Carpenter Ant. Depending on the species they can be quite destructive and in the case of the Green Ant (found in the garden) come with a very painful bite.

With dry weather, ants will often be in search of water and can be found in bathrooms, kitchens and laundries, with excessive amounts of rain they will come inside in search of somewhere dry. They are always in search of their preferred food source and are a complete nuisance as they can be found on the floor, bench tops, ovens, windows, skirting’s, balconies, footpaths, driveways, letterboxes….just about everywhere.

Ant infestations, especially in the kitchen area can be quite difficult to treat with over the counter products and their numbers can build quite rapidly so both early treatment and taking preventative measures are essential.

Different ants are attracted to different foods and we can break them up into two food groups protein ants or sugar ants. It is important we identify the type of ant to apply the right treatment, they can be extremely difficult to completely eradicate, and a combined effort is needed to massively reduce an infestation.

What you can do to control Ants:

  • Clean-up the area after handling or having food
  • Wipe down bench tops and wash used utensils and dishes at the end of each night
  • Keep your bins sealed wherever possible and empty each night
  • Vacuum your home regularly
  • Reduce the availability of water wherever possible
  • Keep stored foods in airtight containers
  • Seal cracks and crevices that may be possible entry points for ants
  • Keep stored food off the floor
  • Make it a point to clean those ‘hard to reach’ places
  • And wash and put away pet’s food bowls
