Damage from Termites Outweighs all Natural Disasters Combined
Did you know that damage from termites outweighs all natural disasters combined in Australia? CTS Termite and Pest Control recently went out to make an assessment of some termite damage on a property that our client had just purchased. He knew there had been termite activity and there would be some damage internally however, it wasn't until he started pulling the walls off to renovate that he became aware of just how much damage had been caused. Left untreated, termites had gained entry in multiple areas and as the previous owners had done nothing to address the problem the termites had created a trail of destruction causing approximately $250,000 worth of structural damage. Behind the plasterboard, termites had eaten just about every timber frame, window frame, door frame as well as most of the roof trusses, leaving pretty much only the brick work standing.
Two (2) of the most common species of termites in SE Qld are the Coptotermes and the Schedorhinotermes. The Coptotermes are an extremely aggressive termite and can cause up to $1,000 worth of damage in a week. The behaviour of the Schedorhinotermes is to multi colonise, which means there can be more than one colony nearby. There are multiple options when it comes to treating termites however, they don't all work to eliminate the colony and everyday we come across extensive, avoidable termite damage. A termite Queen can live up to 50 years and will produce between 1,000 and 3,000 larvae a day depending on the species. This means an established colony can be in the millions and even the best insurance company does not cover for termite damage. A termite inspection at $220 could be the best money you spend this year!
